October Member of the Month: Ben Hatfield

Congratulations to the October Member of the Month: Ben Hatfield!

Ben (or Old Guy Ben as he is known to some), joined us about 2 and a half years ago after being gifted our on-ramp program and since then has completed over 360 classes! Ben was dedicated to our Zoom classes while we were closed for quarantine, working out in his garage with some weights he made using blocks and straps. After maintaining his consistency throughout our closure, he came back to the gym super dedicated, attending over 17 classes for August, September and October!

Ben is always quick to help out in any way he can. Since he often attends the last class of the day, he helps to put away all the equipment and set up for the next days workouts. Pre-Covid, Ben wouldn’t miss a social event, even donating his box seats at the storm game for a members outing! Ben is definitely well deserving of the member of the month title. He is an awesome person, who always workouts hard and great to have in a class! We are lucky to have Ben as a member at 1827!

Huge thank you to Popeyes Supplements Guelph for the prize pack, Greg & Mark at Beech Hill Supply Co. for the clothing sponsorship and Dr. Ben at Ion Health & Performance for the free treatment gift certificate! If you have any supplement questions or want the best prices and selection in town, make sure to check out Popeyes on Stone Road across from the mall. Beech Hill Supply Co apparel is available at their website! If you haven’t yet, reach out to Dr. Ben, who is located in the front of our Unit 13, for your first initial assessment!

How did you get into CrossFit:

I started attending the gym again in 2018 after a long time away.  I was going through the motions at a big gym, but not really getting any value out of it.  My wife bought me a CrossFit 1827 bootcamp course as a father’s day gift.  I went into the bootcamp not really knowing what to expect, and barely able to walk after the first class (thanks Tiff!).  At the end of the bootcamp, I tried a few more classes and I was hooked. BTW, the bootcamp course was graciously donated to a silent auction at Guelph Youth Singers, so, thank you for that.

Favourite Class Time to attend:

Evenings 6:20pm during the week and then 9:00am if possible on the weekends.

Favourite Movement(s):

Probably a toss up between deadlift and back squat.

Least Favourite Movement(s):

Does anyone not say burpees here?

Favourite Cheat Meal/Food:

I can’t decide between chicken wings and pizza. And now I’m hungry.
