Congratulations to the August member of the month: Phil Collier!
Phil has been CrossFitting with us for just over a year after joining with his wife Louise and sister Tiffany (previous members of the month, being great seems to run in the family!) Coming out of quarantine Phil switched up his schedule from being an evening regular to coming out at 7am, and thanks to the schedule change he made it onto his first month of the committed club! Attending 17 classes in August and on track to make the committed club in September, Phil really hit the ground running out of quarantine!
Phil is always a great time to have in class! He is a social member and likes to entertain other members, whether it’s through golf or poker nights at his house (which are kind of on hold due to COVID unforetunatly). Members like Phil are an asset to our gym and we wouldn’t be hitting a 3 year anniversary without members like him! Being committed to the gym not only pays off in his prizes from our sponsors, but Phil is making awesome strength and conditioning progress in just 8 weeks so far, I can’t wait to see where he is at in December!
Huge thank you to Popeyes Supplements Guelph for the prize pack, Greg & Mark at Beech Hill Supply Co. for the clothing sponsorship and Dr. Ben at Ion Health & Performance for the free treatment gift certificate! If you have any supplement questions or want the best prices and selection in town, make sure to check out Popeyes on Stone Road across from the mall. Beech Hill Supply Co apparel is available at their website! If you haven’t yet, reach out to Dr. Ben, who is located in the front of our Unit 13, for your first free initial assessment!
How did you get into CrossFit:I originally joined CrossFit Cambridge back in 2009. I was a regular member there going 4-5 days a week for a little less then a year. My life took a turn and I stopped going. I worked out for periods of time with trainers at various gyms over the years. I had been wanting to get back into CrossFit for a while but was always putting it off. Nothing was ever the same as CrossFit! Going to a regular gym was boring and I was always comparing it. So I used Louise as a reason to get myself there. I convinced her to try it out and I would “tag along” so she’s not too uncomfortable trying out this new intimidating thing. She thought I got her there; it’s the other way around though. Watching her workout at home for so many years and being so dedicated to it I knew she’d excel at it (and boy did she ever!) and my excuses would be useless if she was going regularly. A year and a couple months later of excuses and putting it off to really dedicate myself “next month I’ll get committed club”…”ok next month is my month!”…”I’m so excited to workout at home! I’ll definitely get committed club on quarantine!” Blah blah blah. Then August came around an a little pestering voice finally convinced me to go at 7am. And I loved it! So much easier to get there when you don’t have a choice in the morning. I don’t want Dan or Greg to get mad at me for bailing 30 min prior to class. And the best part is I didn’t even plan it. It just happened! I just like it! Weird! Now I just need to get my diet in order and I’ll be set.
Favourite Class Time to attend: It used to be 6:30 but now it’s 7:10 am. I do miss the 6:30pm’ers though!
Favourite Movement(s): The clean for sure! Heavy though. I find it easier to have a “good clean” with lots of weight.
Least Favourite Movement(s):Burpees!!! Assault bike!
Favourite Cheat Meal/Food: Every day is a cheat day for me! For now. Until the magic diet fairly comes along and beats me with her wand…That’s how it works right…? Bring it on fairy! Favourite meal is rib steak with garlic mash potatoes, seasonal veggies, and frizzled onions. And three cheese garlic butter with the complimentary bread at The Keg.
